Gareth Rees

Gareth Rees has been an upholsterer for more than 24 years and has experience in all aspects of upholstery from commercial production to high end traditional restoration. Gareth studied under the tutelage of the highly respected upholsterer and author David James ("Upholstery A Complete Course" "Upholstery Techniques & Projects" and many other textbooks used in the upholstery world) at university. He worked and trained in various workshops in England and Wales and in 2004 Gareth set up his own company.

Gareth has extensive knowledge of the upholstered seat through the ages and as such has become well known for his upholstery skills and historical expertise. During the years Gareth took commissions and private work, his clients included museums, fine antique dealers, embassies and private collectors.

Following on from training his own staff for 10 years, Gareth is now co-owner with Greg Cupitt-Jones, and Principle Tutor at The British School of Upholstered Furniture, in rural Oxfordshire England, where the AMUSF ( The Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers) diploma is offered. 

The British School of Upholstered Furniture is the only school in the United Kingdom where both tutors are qualified members of The Guild Of Traditional Upholsterers, having sat and passed both the practical and theory examinations. Gareth is a member of the Decorative Arts Society, The Furniture History Society and is the student representative for The Guild of Traditional Upholsterers.

Gareth is a Master Upholsterer who is not only skilled in the techniques of upholstery, but is a natural communicator and has the ability to adapt his teaching methods to each individual students requirements. He provides a relaxed, informal yet informative learning experience.
