This 6 day course on Traditional upholstery is a comprehensive and hands on learning experience for both beginners and those with prior knowledge who wish to improve their skills.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THIS COURSE:

Traditional upholstery is a craft that evolved over centuries. Using a solid wood or webbed platform, it can involve the use of coiled springs, stuffings of Horse, hog, or cow hair, grasses and coir, wools, Hessians, and scrims. Each layer is built up by hand, using bridle and stuffing ties, blind, and topstitching. Nowadays traditional upholstery is used to restore and enhance furniture, often antique pieces. The artistry and attention to detail that define traditional upholstery remain unparalleled. The craft relies heavily on the expertise of those who possess intricate hand skills, including precise cutting, stitching, and fabric manipulation.  This course will include some of these elements.

PROJECT: Students will work on a small useful footstool and will include the following fundamental skills and techniques- webbing, springing, stuffing, and stitching. These techniques are the building blocks of traditional upholstery.

MATERIALS AND STUFFINGS: Students will become familiar with various natural materials commonly used in traditional upholstery, including horsehair, jute, and linen. Understanding these materials and stuffings is crucial for achieving the desired finish.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS: The course will provide a step-by-step understanding of the upholstery process. Students will learn how to sequence and execute each stage of the upholstery project effectively.

LINKING MATERIALS AND PROCESS: An essential aspect of traditional upholstery is knowing how to select the right materials for each step of the process. Students will learn how to match materials to specific tasks, ensuring a quality final product.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE: Participants will engage in practical work, allowing them to apply the knowledge they have gained. They will work on a project from start to finish guided by the tutor.
