Since our establishment in 2018, Upholstery Education has been dedicated to providing the highest quality tuition to students worldwide. In the beginning, we offered only traditional upholstery techniques using horsehair. Since then, we have also provided foam techniques, but for San Diego 2026, our 6-day course combines both traditional and modern techniques and materials to create historical furniture designs.
ARMAND VERDIER - Louis XVI chair back "en tableaux" with traditional materials and finishes
GARETH REES - Modern interpretation of the "en tableaux" back focusing on clean profiles and proportions
LOUIS XVI back En Tableaux
Armand loves attention to detail, and precise details are even better. Within this 3 day workshop, students will be creating a classic back style, seen so often in antique and modern chairs. Students will learn how to stitch a rectangular shape seen on Louis XVI chairs. This back can be finished with provided period appropriate damask fabric and trim.
Louis XVI and viola shaped back in modern materials
Using foam and other contemporary materials, students will learn how to sculpt historic shapes in both an "en tableaux" square back and a sinuous viola shaped back. This 3 day workshop will also include a lecture about design and shape in period furniture around the globe.
